Twelve places for the whole crew

Ponta and Santa Maria to Barra. Each one can sleep everyone together or in neighbouring houses with one braai spot, take our boats and still come in at a fair price. Have a look, then vote in the poll.

The brief

What every place had to tick

We need about 30 adults and 22 kids in houses next to each other, not spread over a village. It has to be on a beach you'd actually post, with a launch for 3–4 ski-boats, and priced so a family doesn't need a second bond.

50+ beds togetherOne resort, or neighbouring houses with one shared braai and party spot
Boats sortedA launch on site or within ±1 km, or a mooring at the door
Real beachSea views, pools or tidal pools for the kids
Fair priceR270–R1,110 pp a night, most under R750

Per-person figures are the cost of the houses we'd need divided by the beds, and kids count as a bed. Prices are the published 2025/26 rates unless marked as an estimate. Expect roughly 8–10% more for 2027. Drive times are from Maputo; add the border on top. Ranked on beach, houses and fishing for the money.

Also checked in Santa Maria and Inhaca, and why they're not on the list
    • Inhaca Island. No single place sleeps us. Pestana Inhaca is closed for refurbishment with no reopening date. The biggest options are Ross Ramos Camp (32, tents and cabins with communal bathrooms), Nahyeeni (13, from R1,600 pp) and Kanyaka (12, from $95 pp). That's 3 separate places, still short of 52, and the island is boat-only. Do it as a day trip from Santa Maria instead.
    • Machangulo Beach Lodge, Loggerhead, Leatherback, The Monarch. Gorgeous, but full-board luxury for 10–14 guests each, from about $215–$400 pp a night.
    • Nhucha Villas, Casa Karibu. 20 and 10 beds, too small, and not next to each other or to the bigger places.

Shown for a north-coast pick like Golden Palms or Barra. For Ponta or Bilene, cut a day off each end. For Santa Maria, Day 1 ends at Maputo Marina instead: shop in Maputo, launch our boats there (30-day seaworthy plus Port Captain paperwork) and cross the bay in 1–1.5 h. Cars and trailers stay in marina parking. Families go across on a charter boat (Nhoxani quotes ±R13,750 return per boat, 2026), or by 4x4 through the Maputo Special Reserve in ±4.5 h.

    1. Day 0 · FridayDrive to the border town

Leave Gauteng after lunch and sleep in Komatipoort or Malelane, so the boats are first in the queue in the morning.

    2. Day 1 · SaturdayLebombo → the coast

Cross at Lebombo/Ressano Garcia as early as possible, then take the Maputo ring road and the EN1 north in convoy. Fuel at Xai-Xai. Shop for the week in Maxixe or Inhambane and be at the houses by late afternoon.

    3. Days 2–7Fish mornings, beach afternoons

Launch at first light and be back before the afternoon wind. Kids get pools, rock pools and the beach, plus a whale-shark and manta snorkel trip at Tofo or Barra. Have a market morning in Inhambane and prawns at least twice.

    4. Day 8Home in one push

Leave by 05:00, be through the border before midday and home by dark. Don't cross on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings or Easter, and avoid 15 Dec–5 Jan if dates allow.

    Border, per car

    • Passports. SA ordinary passports are visa-free for up to 30 days. Bring the kids’ unabridged birth certificates too, plus a consent affidavit if one parent isn’t travelling.
    • Original registration papers for the car, trailer and boat. If anything is financed, bring a bank letter with travel dates, certified by a commissioner of oaths.
    • TIP (temporary import permit) for each car, trailer and boat, and check the customs stamp before you drive off.
    • Moz third-party insurance for each car and each towed item. Buy it online beforehand to skip a queue.
    • 2 red triangles, 2 reflective vests and a ZA sticker. Towing cars need the blue-and-yellow triangles front right and on the back of the trailer.
    • No beer over the border. Spirits are limited to 1 litre pp, so buy 2M locally.

    Boats and skippers

    • Each skipper carries a skipper's ticket, the boat's registration and a valid COF.
    • Each angler on the boat needs a Moz recreational fishing licence. Most lodges arrange these, so ask when we book.
    • Each boat needs a local launch or boat permit. The venue usually sorts it, and Ponta also has marine-reserve fees.
    • Safety kit: life jackets for everyone, flares, VHF, an anchor and a spare prop. Run in pairs on the deep runs.
    • Trailer: a spare wheel, a spare set of bearings and a grease gun. The sand eats bearings.

We'll confirm the exact permits with the venue we pick.

    What to pack

    • Meticais cash for fuel, markets and tips, and copies of every document in a plastic sleeve.
    • Malaria: speak to your doctor about the kids early. Pack repellent, long sleeves for the evenings and reef-safe SPF.
    • Reef shoes, snorkel sets, rash vests and a beach tent for each family.
    • Cooler boxes and ice packs for the catch, vacuum bags, and a fish-cleaning knife.
    • A first-aid kit, a tyre gauge (deflate on sand), a tow rope, a compressor and a fire extinguisher.
